Holy Cross Eighth Grade Student Jump Starts Macro-Project

Olivia Keavey, an eighth grade student at Holy Cross School in Rumson, New Jersey, recently donated $750.00 that jump started a macro-project to generate funds for a girls’ dorm at Morning Star School, the site of my mission in Mwanza, Tanzania.  Historically during the Christmas season, the Keavey household and relatives promote their ideas for a charitable contribution.  Olivia elected to promote my mission in Mwanza, and her family and relatives chose and supported her interest with this generous donation

Inspired by Olivia’s gift, my brother-in-law and sister generously offered an additional gift to promote the dorm’s construction.

There will be approximately 40 plus secondary school age girls (ages 12-16) that will board this January 2012 for their new school year.  At present, there are two classrooms that will be used for the dorms and an additional building next to the outdoor kitchen that will house 3 younger girls in primary that also board.  The primary school girls are housed with two adult kitchen staff members in an extremely small facility that lacks privacy.

To date, there are two bathrooms available for this cadre of girls.  Two additional bathrooms are a distance from the makeshift dorms and were designed for toileting only.  It would be ideal if a dormitory could be constructed that would have ample room for the female students to store their private belongings, and most importantly, additional bathroom facilities to accommodate the number of boarders.

Pictured below are photos of the boys' dormitory that is under construction.  Hopefully if the weather coupled by electricity cooperates it will be ready for the onset of school.  It would be a wonderful addition to the school to mirror the boys' dorm with a girls' facility.

The students work exceptionally hard and would be most appreciative of any efforts that would generate funds to support a new dormitory.  Often the students themselves are engaged in the construction process.  They will be instructed to move rocks for the foundation or participate in the daily clean up of the site.

The students' day begins at 4:45am in which they prepare for school, pray, exercise, and then begin classes at 7am.  There is a brief break for tea at 9:30am before they return back to class.   Lunch is generally served after thirty minutes of prayer and song. Classes resume after lunch until 4pm.  In the afternoon after classes the students are engaged in varied chores around the school's compound.  Prior to dinner they recite prayers and sing for approximately 30 minutes before they are served dinner.  After dinner, they are back in the classroom for quiet individual study or review till 9:30pm.  Generally, lights are out around 10pm, but one is not surprised to learn that a student was under his/her sheets studying further with their "torch"/flashlight!

If you are interested in following Olivia’s efforts to support the "macro-project” of the girls’ dorm please send your gift via the information below.  Your gift would certainly be a tremendous contribution to the school that is developing the future generation of Tanzania.

Below is the information that will allow one to directly deposit
